The New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership has postponed the Akuapem South parliamentary primary following Member of Parliament Osei Bonsu Amoah’s withdrawal.
In an official statement on Thursday, January 25, 2023, the NPP declared, “The Akuapem South Parliamentary primary, initially scheduled for Saturday January 27, 2024, is postponed.”
The decision, influenced by petitions and recommendations from both constituency and regional executive committees, aims to facilitate comprehensive consultation and address concerns.
Osei Bonsu Amoah, MP for Akuapem South Constituency, cited personal and national interests for his withdrawal from the NPP’s upcoming parliamentary primaries scheduled for January 27, 2024.
In a letter to the NPP dated January 19, 2024, he stated, “I write to inform you that I have decided to withdraw as a candidate.” Amoah emphasized that his withdrawal adheres to Public Elections Regulations 2016, C.I.94″.
Despite withdrawing from the race, Amoah expressed his continued involvement in national politics, stating, “I haven’t indicated anywhere that I am quitting politics.”
Starr News reported a month earlier that OB Amoah only filed nomination form just to ensure the disqualification of the MCE Frank Aidoo, who filed with the condition that should OB Amoah steps down along the line,he should be included in the contest.
Amoah however refuted the claim of possibility of stepping down to support his former Aide Eric Yeboah Apeadu.
With OB Amoah’s withdrawal, contenders Eric Apeadu Yeboah, Kwame Ofori Gyawu, and Samuel Annor Mensah vie fiercely for the seat held by Amoah for four consecutive terms.
Some Party delegates had earlier in an interview with Starr News called for reinstating the disqualified MCE.
Some traditional rulers are similarly lobbying for the MCE to be in the contest and subsequently become parliamentary candidate and ultimately Member of Parliament.
