The immediate past Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ledzokuku, Mordecai Abusuayedom Quarshie, has attributed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general elections largely to the unpopularity of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Speaking on The Verdict Show with Isaac Addae on Starr 103.5 FM on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, Mr Quarshie stated plainly that the former president was a key factor in the party’s loss.
“In my view, yes,” he affirmed when asked whether Nana Addo was the main reason the party lost. “Right now, I know we don’t like him. It’s clear. We couldn’t represent him.”
Mr Quarshie, who is also a management consultant, admitted that although the president had to fight hard during his time in office, part of the negative public perception resulting from that struggle cost the party significantly at the polls.
“He had to fight very, very hard, and part of the negatives of that struggle is what we are seeing now.”
However, he urged the public and his party not to be hasty in judgment, expressing optimism that time would eventually vindicate the former president.
“Let’s do four years down the line… let’s come back and look. Because after the nausea ends, the food you didn’t like might look good again,” he said, using a metaphor to describe public opinion.
He added that just as President John Mahama, once written off, managed a strong comeback, so could the NPP’s image and message improve over time.
Mr Quarshie further urged the NPP to focus on unity and self-renewal.
“What’s important is that NPP, we unite, we come together, and we commit to service to humanity, not our own,” he said.
He concluded with a call for reflection within the party, expressing hope that the NPP would eventually present a refreshed and compelling alternative to Ghanaians.
