Highlife icon Gyedu-Blay Ambolley has dismissed Shatta Wale’s self-proclaimed title as the “Dancehall King.”
Speaking in an interview with Bola Ray on Starr Chat on Thursday, April 2, 2026, the veteran musician described the claim as a “complete joke.”
He argued that the title of “King” should be reserved for those who established the genre’s foundations in the country.
”How can you be a dancehall King if you didn’t create dancehall? Shatta Wale is joking,” Ambolley stated.
Shatta Wale has aggressively marketed himself as the premier African Dancehall act since his rebranding and return to the mainstream over a decade ago.
While the comments triggered an immediate backlash from the “Shatta Movement” fanbase on social media, the artiste himself took a surprisingly diplomatic stance.
Shatta Wale took to Facebook to urge his followers to remain respectful toward the Highlife legend.
”Please nobody should attack him, no disrespect please. I loved this man from infancy and I can’t and will never disrespect his views. Maybe we have to learn more in the hard way. Thank you my legend, [I am not angry] at all. It’s all love.”
