President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has left Ghana to attend the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) replenishment conference in Dakar, Senegal.
Education advocates across the globe and Heads of State attending the event hope the conference in Dakar will be a “turning point” for global education financing.
Country leaders and ministers will announce their funding pledges, but the spotlight will also be on developing countries and their commitment to bring their own education spending closer to 20% of national budgets.
The President was accompanied by senior government officials at the Presidency. He is expected to return home before close of day.
The Global Partnership for Education
The Global Partnership for Education is the only global fund solely dedicated to education in developing countries. Established in 2002, GPE is a multi-stakeholder partnership and funding platform that aims to strengthen education systems in developing countries in order to dramatically increase the number of children who are in school and learning.
GPE brings together developing countries, donors, international organizations, civil society, teacher organizations, the private sector and foundations.
GPE has adopted as its vision the new Global Goal for education, calling for inclusive, equitable quality education for all by 2030. GPE 2020, GPE’s strategic plan for the next five years, turns this vision in actionable goals and objectives.
Building Stronger Education Systems
GPE supports governments in developing countries to develop good quality education sector plans. Governments take the lead in planning and are accountable for delivery. GPE enables needs analysis, works to strengthen technical capacity, and brings in the talent and resources of all partners.
GPE also support countries with the greatest needs, and the children and youth most often left behind.
Additionally, GPE supports nations with high numbers of out-of-school children and weak school completion rates. GPE focuses on reaching the children that are most marginalized and vulnerable including girls, children with disabilities, and those who live in countries that are characterized by extreme poverty and/or conflict. Almost 50% of GPE funds go to countries affected by fragility and conflict.
