A vibrant display of sportsmanship, nostalgia, and networking marked the maiden edition of the Alumni Power Games, as several top alumni groups emerged victorious across various competitions held at the El Wak Stadium over the weekend.

Alumni teams from Okuapemman, Ghana National College, St John’s Grammar, Holy Child School, Oti Boateng, Mawuli School, Accra Girls’ Senior High School, and Sekyere SDA School all secured wins in their respective categories during the highly patronized event.

The competition, which brought together old students from different institutions, featured a mix of competitive and recreational sporting disciplines aimed at fostering unity and engagement among alumni.

The event officially kicked off with a ceremonial first touch by the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, who used the occasion to announce government plans to revive the National Schools and Colleges Sports Festival, as well as introduce a National Alumni Fund.

In the headline football event, Okuapemman clinched the title after edging past New Juaben Schools in a tense penalty shootout following a goalless draw in regulation time.

Ghana National College impressed in the volleyball competition, emerging as champions after a dominant performance throughout the tournament.

Elsewhere, Oti Boateng School secured victory in the armwrestling finals with a win over St John’s Grammar, while Accra Girls’ Senior High School and Sekyere SDA School triumphed in the women’s and men’s sack races respectively.

St John’s Grammar and Mawuli School took top honors in the lime-on-spoon race in the women’s and men’s categories, while Holy Child School demonstrated intellectual prowess by winning the Scrabble competition.

Beyond the competitive events, the day was filled with excitement and entertainment. Alumni groups, including the Vandals of the University of Ghana and the Ghana Supporters Union, thrilled the crowd with energetic jama coupled with live stage performances from Kojo Black and other musicians.

The Alumni Power Games not only celebrated athletic excellence but also reinforced the importance of alumni engagement, networking, and community building, setting a strong foundation for future editions of the event.
