Ama Pratt, spokesperson for Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has highlighted a decline in former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s popularity within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), urging the party to be truthful with Ghanaians as it works to rebuild public trust.
Speaking on GHToday with Lilly Mohammed on GHOne TV on Wednesday, February 4, Ama Pratt noted that Dr. Bawumia’s support in party flagbearership contests has decreased over time. She pointed out that he secured 61.47% in his previous contest, compared with 56% in the most recent race.
“He has dropped. His popularity has dropped within his party,” Pratt said. “When we have these conversations, we stick to the facts. We say them as it is.”
The Vice President’s spokesperson contextualised the decline, linking it to the NPP’s defeat in the December 2024 general elections, which naturally led to reduced support for the party and its leading figures. According to Pratt, acknowledging these realities is crucial for the party to take effective steps toward regaining voter confidence.
Pratt welcomed calls by the former Minister for Information, Kojo Opong Nkrumah, for the NPP to deliberately rebuild trust among Ghanaians. However, she stressed that the party’s efforts must start with honesty rather than spin or social media applause.
“A party that is grappling for the trust of its citizens should start from the truth,” she said. “Ghanaians know the truth. Ghanaians see the truth. So lead with the truth. Come to us with the truth, practically.”

Turning to speculations about future leadership contests, Pratt dismissed discussions about whether the Vice President would seek the presidency or consider potential running mates, stressing that she remains focused on her current responsibilities.
