Farmers deserve better – Annoh-Dompreh slams GH¢2,650 cocoa price

Minority Chief Whip questions government’s new cocoa pricing for 2026/2027 season.

Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has criticised the government’s new producer price of GH¢2,650 per 64-kilogramme bag of cocoa for the 2026/2027 crop season.

The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) announced the new price on Friday, September 25, 2026, raising the producer price from GH¢41,392 per tonne in the previous season to GH¢42,400 per tonne. The new rate took effect the same day.

Reacting to the announcement in a post on X, Mr Annoh-Dompreh described the new price as disappointing and questioned the government’s approach to cocoa pricing.

“Cocoa new farm gate price: GH¢2650!!. Now, the ‘scales’ of deception have been removed. This govt. will contend with us & our cocoa farmers once more!”

He subsequently criticised what he described as the “impunity” of the government, arguing that concerns over agricultural livelihoods extend beyond the cocoa sector.

According to the Minority Chief Whip, producers of other major food crops, including rice, maize and yam, are also facing difficulties and require policies that better address their needs.

The Minority Caucus maintains that Ghanaian farmers deserve better returns for their produce, greater transparency in agricultural pricing and policies that protect their livelihoods.

“Our farmers deserve better,” the Caucus said.

COCOBOD, meanwhile, says the new cocoa producer price represents 71.18% of the realised gross free-on-board (FOB) value of cocoa. The Board said the price was determined following consultations with key stakeholders, including cocoa farmers, the Ministry of Finance and representatives of the cocoa marketing sector.

The new pricing arrangement comes under the newly enacted Ghana Cocoa Board Act, 2026, which provides for cocoa farmers to receive a minimum of 70% of the realised gross FOB value.
