Ghana has recorded simultaneous cuts on three fibre routes supplying capacity to the five Northern Regions and parts of the Oti Region, resulting in significant disruptions to telecommunications services.
The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, said the incidents affected fibre routes operated by MTN Ghana, Telecel Ghana and the National Information Technology Agency (NITA).
According to Mr George, multiple cuts were recorded on the Kintampo-Buipe fibre route, on the MTN section, at 0419 GMT.
A further cut occurred on the Wakawaka-Bamboi route, on the Telecel section, at 1136 GMT, while the Hohoe-Jasikan route, on the NITA section, was also affected at 1125 GMT.
The Minister said technical teams from MTN Ghana, Telecel Ghana and NITA had been dispatched to identify the causes of the cuts and restore affected services.
The incidents have resulted in service denial or significant degradation across a substantial number of network sites.
Currently, 694 2G and 3G sites and 521 4G sites are experiencing disruptions, according to the Minister.
Mr George acknowledged the continued impact of fibre cuts on telecommunications service delivery and said the technical teams, working under the supervision of the National Communications Authority (NCA), were expected to begin restoring services within a few hours.
He apologised to customers and residents in the affected regions for the inconvenience caused by the disruptions.
