The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic military helicopter crash in Ghana that claimed the lives of eight individuals, including two cabinet ministers.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, the AU Chairperson conveyed his “heartfelt condolences” to President John Dramani Mahama, the Government, and the people of Ghana following what he described as a “national tragedy.”
Among the deceased were Ghana’s Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed. The Chairperson also extended his sympathies to the bereaved families and expressed support for the Ghana Armed Forces and the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“The African Union stands in full solidarity with Ghana in mourning this profound loss,” Mr. Youssouf stated. “May the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace.”
The military helicopter went down in the Ashanti Region while en route from Accra to Obuasi, killing all eight people on board. The incident has triggered national mourning and tributes from across Ghana and the international community.
