Theophilus Dzimega Junior Esq., a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team, has defended the conduct of the party’s First National Vice Chairman, Sofo Azorka, during a confrontation at the Akwatia by-election.
The incident unfolded at the Akwatia lorry station when NPP National Vice Chairman, Osman Masawudu, was addressing journalists.
Azorka reportedly took exception to Masawudu’s comments, sparking a heated exchange that almost turned violent.
The clash has since drawn widespread condemnation, with the NPP petitioning the Ghana Police to investigate.
But speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey on Friday, September 5, 2025, Mr. Dzimega downplayed the incident, describing it as a “friendly exchange” that was blown out of proportion.
According to him, the body language of the two politicians showed no signs of hostility, and it was rather the crowd that escalated the situation.
“Let’s be honest. I don’t know whether you’ve really watched the video of the two vice chair. If you watch the guy, when Azorka was getting close, he [Masawudu] kept saying you are my uncle or you are my brother. I can’t do anything. And he was sort of like smiling, the NPP chair was sort of like smiling. I mean, if you watch it towards the end, I will say those who are jumping in between the two of them who are the ones that appear to have caused a bit of issue between them.” Dzimega explained.
He argued that Azorka’s actions should be understood within the context of familiarity rather than aggression, urging the public not to exaggerate the matter.
