Former Akwatia Member of Parliament, Baba Jamal, has issued a stern reminder to New Juaben South MP, Michael Okyere Baafi, to stand by his word after declaring that he would resign from Parliament if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) loses the Akwatia by-election.
Mr. Okyere Baafi, speaking during the one-week observance of the late Akwatia MP, Ernest Kumi, accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of failing to fulfil its 2024 campaign promises.
He declared confidently that the NPP would reclaim the seat, stressing: “If the NPP loses this Akwatia by-election, I will resign as MP. Mark my words!”
However, in an interview with media on election day, Baba Jamal stressed that the NDC would hold the NPP lawmaker accountable for his promise if his party fails at the polls.
“….Otherwise we’ll all give him the necessary disdain and disrespect as MP, we’ll show him serious disrespect because we’ll not trust him again. He has come to give his words. As I’m speaking now, have I put my integrity on the line?
I’m saying that I’ll be extremely surprised, we’ve done our work, if we win fine. Because in politics surprises will never end. So, if you come and say that you’ll resign, if that’s what he said, I’m telling you we are going to hold him to that,” Baba Jamal insisted.
The Akwatia by-election, which has attracted intense national interest, is being contested mainly between the NDC’s Bernard Baidoo and the NPP’s Solomon Asumadu.
A total of 52,328 registered voters across 119 polling stations in 21 electoral areas are expected to participate, with the Electoral Commission (EC) deploying 484 election officials to oversee the process.
Despite the morning’s disturbances, the EC reports that voting has been peaceful, with polling stations well-supplied and accessible, including tactile jackets for visually impaired voters.
Security agencies have also reinforced their presence, cautioning political actors against provocative conduct.
