Flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party(NPP) Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has promised to pay living allowances to the Chieftaincy institution if he wins the 2024 election.
Addressing the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs as part of his tour of the Greater Accra Region, the Vice President stated that the allowance will help the chieftaincy institution to be more effective.
According to him, the Chieftaincy institution must be financially resourced and “empowered to make decisions that help the government.”
“To be able to get the Chieftaincy institution to really play its proper role, financially the institution has to be resourced. Because you can’t give them responsibilities without resourcing them.
“So the recommendation that has come and we will put it in the manifesto to make sure we pay a living allowance to the chieftaincy institution. By this, I mean the paramount chiefs currently it’s GHc1,000 a month. Even to attend a meeting it may not be enough for petrol,” Dr. Bawumia stated.
He continued: “There is no payment for the queen mothers, there is no payment for Divisional chiefs and so we need to pay living allowances to the Paramount chiefs, to the Divisional chiefs and also to the Queen mothers. If we do that then you will see that the chieftaincy institution will be empowered to take decisions that help the government.”
