The Office of the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has denied claims linking its name to the illegal demolition of buildings in Accra’s wealthy Cantonments and Labone neighborhoods.
This explanation comes after concerns were raised over illegal demolitions in Cantonments and Labone with many property owners seeking legal action for their losses.
The Spokesperson to the Vice President, Gideon Boako, in a statement issued a statement on September 6, 2024, stressed that the Vice President’s office is not involved in the said activity.
“The Office of the Vice President has taken notice of news items alleging unlawful entry and demolition of some properties in the Cantonments and Labone areas,” the statement read.
“We wish to place on record that the Vice President or his Office does not have any interest in any property in the Cantonments and Labone areas where such acts are alleged to have occurred.”
He further stated that no official or agent from the office had been authorized or ordered to engage in any action connected to the security or interference with properties in these areas.
“Also, no officer, agent, or assign has been directed by the Vice President or his Office to secure and/or interfere in any matter pertaining to lands or properties in the Labone and Cantoment areas”, he assured.
In a call for justice, Mr. Boako encouraged law enforcement to fully examine the matter and hold those responsible accountable. “We call on the IGP and the police hierarchy to collaborate with the victims to apprehend the perpetrators for the necessary legal action,” Mr. Boako voiced.
Mr. Boako also warned the general public to dismiss any information indicating the Vice President’s involvement, advising that, “We are by this release, calling on the general public to treat as false, any information contrary to the position stated above.”
