The Eastern Regional branch of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), say the election of Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as flagbearer of the party has silenced critics who previously portrayed the NPP as an Akan-dominated party.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) successfully concluded its Presidential primaries, officially designating Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s Flagbearer for the highly anticipated 2024 general elections.

Dr. Bawumia polled 118,210 representing 61.43% votes in the Presidential primary held across the country on Saturday, November 4, 2023, which had about 210,000 delegates casting their ballot.

His closest contender, Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Ken Agyapong polled 71, 996 votes which represented 37.41%

A statement issued by the Regional Communications officer of the party Evans Osei Yeboah Tsooboi said, the primaries have not only set the stage for a heated electoral battle but also underscored the NPP’s commitment to unity and inclusivity.

This decision has not only been seen as a significant triumph for the Vice President but also as a reaffirmation of the NPP’s unwavering dedication to embracing individuals from diverse backgrounds, irrespective of their religion, tribe, or creed.

The move sends a powerful message to detractors who have, in the past, portrayed the NPP as unfriendly to minority groups and tribes in Ghana.

“The election of Vice President Dr. Bawumia as our Flagbearer is a historical milestone that has brought true meaning to the Dankwa-Dombo-Busia tradition and deepened its tenets as a national party that accommodates every individual irrespective of their religion, tribe or creed. The event of yesterday has crowned every single effort employed by the NPP over the years to debunk the false impression created by our opponents and detractors that we are hostile to minority groups/ tribes in Ghana.

The resounding victory obtained by the Vice President is a clear indication of the absolute confidence the rank and file of the party have in his competence and leadership abilities, and our unwavering commitment to work with him to retain political power in 2024″ the statement emphasized.

Eastern Regional Executives of the NPP believe Dr. Bawumia’s decisive victory in the primaries is a clear testament to the confidence and trust the NPP’s rank and file have in his leadership and competence.

The NPP leadership has unequivocally stated its commitment to working hand in hand with the Vice President to attain political power in the 2024 elections.

They acknowledge that the region is a key battleground in this electoral race, playing a pivotal role by delivering Dr. Bawumia the third-highest number of votes.

The executives accept that the outcome places a significant responsibility on the shoulders of the party’s leadership in the region, pledging their unwavering support for the Flagbearer and a relentless pursuit of the party’s objectives.

While acknowledging the dedication and efforts of other Presidential aspirants, including Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, Hon. Dr. Akoto Owusu Afriyie, and Hon. Ing. Francis Addai Nimo, the Eastern regional Executives have called on their supporters to stand united and remain loyal to the party’s cause.

The emphasis on unity within the party is seen as vital in maximizing their chances of success in the 2024 general elections.

The NPP leadership in the region expressed their deep appreciation for the aspirants, their representatives, and the delegates for their pivotal role in conducting free, fair, transparent, and incident-free primaries.

Furthermore, they lauded the professionalism exhibited by the Electoral Commission and the Ghana Police Service throughout the region received high praise.

Additionally, they also commended the media’s comprehensive and unwavering coverage of the election from start to finish.

The NPP reiterated its unity and determination to retain power in 2024, highlighting that all Presidential aspirants at the primaries had shown their unwavering commitment to the party’s cause.

The statement said in the coming days, the party in the region plans to showcase the achievements of the NPP government across all sectors of the economy to counter any propaganda or false information that could potentially affect their electoral prospects in 2024.
