Bernard Mornah drags EC to court over disqualification

The flag bearer of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Bernard Mornah, has sued Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) over his disqualification from the impending 2024 Presidential Election.

In a statement on Friday, September 20, 2024, Ghana’s electoral governing body disqualified Mr. Mornah and 11 other presidential aspirants.

According to the EC, the presidential aspirants were disqualified due to their failure to correct errors on their nomination forms.

“Mr. Bernard Mornah also had incomplete details of supporters. He also used registered voters in a particular district to support the nomination in other districts.

“His form also contained varying signatures for the same supporters and in some cases the same signature for different supporters. The committee was of the view that he be disqualified”, Chairperson of the EC, Jean Mensa stated during a press conference.

However, speaking on Starr FM midday news with Naa Dedei Tettey, Mr. Mornah stated that he has met all the requirements by the EC.

“People have invested their minds into this knowing very well that my leadership of this country will poteen for our future. You don’t just come to ditch them anyhow. In the most bizarre and hazardous manner, most unprofessional, has the Electoral Commission got a final voters register?

“So if the EC itself does not have a final register, what do they expect us to do? How do you accept nominations before a compilation of a final register, how do you do that?

Mr. Mornah has subsequently initiated a court action seeking “An order of mandamus compelling the 2nd respondent to declare the 1st applicant as duly nominated to contest the 2024 public presidential elections.”

“An order restraining the 1st and 2nd respondents from printing the presidential ballot papers or carrying on with the December 7, 2024 Public Presidential Elections until 1st Applicant is declared duly nominated candidate of the 2nd applicant and allowed to contest the said elections.”
