The proprietor of The Big Six Educational Complex in Meduma, Mr Afoakwa Sarpong, has been arrested for allegedly detaining two students during the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
The arrest took place on Monday, June 17, 2025, at 2:00 PM. It was executed by the Kwabre East Municipal Director of Education, Nana Adu Mensah Asare, with the support of the Directorate’s Public Relations Officer, Ms Mavis Okyere Anane. Mr Sarpong was subsequently handed over to the Mamponteng District Police Command.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Mr Sarpong unlawfully confined two Junior High School candidates in a separate room at the examination centre during the Mathematics paper. The action was reportedly linked to the students’ inability to pay their registration fees. According to reports, the pupils were only released after the exam had ended.
The act has been described by education authorities and law enforcement as an unlawful deprivation of liberty. Police have since launched a formal investigation into the incident.
Deputy Superintendent of Police and Head of the Public Affairs Unit in the Ashanti Region, Godwin Ahianyo, confirmed the arrest and warned that such conduct—especially during a crucial national examination—would not be tolerated.
The Mamponteng District Police Command has assured the public that appropriate legal steps are being taken and further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
