Black Sherif’s impact on Ghanaian Education: A new dimension in creative arts

In an unexpected twist for students taking the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in Ghana, acclaimed music star Black Sherif made an appearance not on stage, but in their examination papers.

The Creative Arts and Design subject featured Black Sherif alongside celebrated composers Ephraim Amu and Agya Koo Nimo in a question that tested students’ knowledge of notable figures in Ghanaian music.

Question 5(c) of Section B asked candidates to write a short note about each composer, detailing their hometowns, genres, notable works, and contributions to society. Black Sherif, born Mohammed Ismail Sherif, hails from Konongo-Zongo in the Ashanti Region and shot to fame in March 2022 with his hit single ‘Kwaku the Traveller.’ His debut album, The Villain I Never Was, released on October 5, 2022, cemented his place in the music industry.

The inclusion of contemporary figures like Black Sherif in academic assessments highlights a progressive shift in Ghana’s education system. The new Creative Arts and Design subject, part of the Common Core Programme (CCP), emphasizes the importance of self-exploration, self-expression, and mental focus. It aims to develop students’ physical dexterity and stress management through disciplines like design, visual arts, music, dance, and drama.

By incorporating modern icons in educational materials, Ghanaian educators are bridging the gap between academic learning and students’ cultural experiences. This approach not only makes learning more relatable but also inspires students by showcasing the achievements of contemporary role models.

The 2024 BECE, which began on July 8 and will conclude on July 15, marks a significant milestone in the integration of cultural relevance and academic rigor in Ghana’s educational landscape. As students engage with the lives and works of figures like Black Sherif, they are encouraged to see the potential for their own contributions to society, fostering a new generation of creative and culturally aware citizens.
