The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that the Government of Ghana has fully cleared all outstanding arrears of the Capitation Grant for basic schools, covering the period from 2023 to date.
In a press release dated July 23, 2025 and signed by signed by Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations, GES stated that the payment of these arrears demonstrates the government’s strong resolve and practical support for the smooth operation and effective management of basic education nationwide.
“The Capitation Grant plays a critical role in the administration of public basic schools by providing much-needed financial support for the purchase of teaching and learning materials, minor repairs, and other essential school-based management activities,” the statement noted.
GES highlighted that timely disbursement of the grant empowers heads of basic schools to deliver quality education with greater autonomy and accountability.
The management of GES expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance for prioritising the payments despite the current economic challenges. GES also commended heads of basic schools for their patience and dedication in ensuring that teaching and learning continued without interruption.
“We urge all school leaders to use the funds responsibly and in line with the guidelines for the utilisation of the Capitation Grant,” the release said, adding that monitoring teams at the district and regional levels will intensify supervision to ensure compliance and value for money.
GES reaffirmed its commitment to working with all stakeholders to enhance learning outcomes, improve school management systems, and ensure inclusive, equitable, and quality education for every Ghanaian child.
