The Bank of Ghana (BoG) will today, Tuesday, October 28, 2025, officially launch the 60th anniversary celebration of the Ghana Cedi at the Accra International Conference Centre under the theme “60 Years of the Cedi: A Symbol of Sovereignty, Stability, and Economic Resilience.”

The event, which begins at 10:00 a.m., will have President John Dramani Mahama as the Special Guest of Honour.

The Cedi, first introduced on July 19, 1965, marked Ghana’s assertion of economic independence and sovereignty following the end of colonial rule. Over the past six decades, the currency has undergone several reforms and redesigns, symbolizing the country’s resilience, stability, and progress.

According to the Bank of Ghana, the Cedi@60 celebration presents an opportunity to reflect on six decades of monetary sovereignty, deepen public understanding of Ghana’s financial journey, and promote pride in the Cedi as a key symbol of national identity.

“This anniversary allows us to engage the public on the history and future of the Cedi, strengthen financial literacy, and inspire Ghanaians to uphold the integrity of our national currency,” the Bank said in a statement.

The year-long celebration will include public education campaigns, regional outreach programmes, and youth competitions to promote financial awareness and national pride.

Activities planned include a national launch ceremony, a *Cedi Van Regional Roadshow* across all regions, a currency conference with participation from global central banks and academia, and student-focused art, essay, and quiz contests highlighting the Cedi’s legacy.

The BoG stressed that the Cedi@60 celebration goes beyond marking history — it reaffirms Ghana’s economic sovereignty and the central bank’s commitment to sustaining monetary stability.

The official launch will be broadcast live nationwide on all EIB Network television and radio platforms.
