Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Adjei Awatey has revealed her difficulty in watching a video of school children crossing a water body when she initially came across it.
She said she swiftly moved to understand the situation at hand upon watching the video.
“I couldn’t watch to the end. I couldn’t watch it. The first time I saw this video, I couldn’t watch it. It was later I had to sit down as a mother to really know what is happening so it wasn’t an easy sight at all,” she narrated to Naa Dedei Tettey on Morning Starr.
President Mahama shared a post on social media decrying the situation and expressing commitment to improving conditions.
“We have identified the community where young school children have to cross this water body to access school.
“Earlier today, the MP for Lower West Akim, Owen Kwame Frimpong, visited the Asuokow community and assured them the Eastern Regional Minister will also visit, as we work to permanently and urgently resolve the challenge the people and the school children are confronted with,” the president wrote on Facebook.
The Eastern Regional Minister disclosed that there were equally dangerous situations of river crossing by locals to access educational and health facilities within the region.
The minister observed that in Afram Plains children had to cross water bodies using ropes, a situation which could be deadly.
She assures that it was not going to be a one-time intervention and plans were far advanced to access these locations.
Mrs. Awatey indicated that as a regional minister, she had the duty of representing the president in the Eastern Region hence the need for her to be proactive in understanding issues on the ground.
