A man popularly known as Cyborg has been convicted by an Adentan court and fined the equivalent of 240 penalty units, amounting to GH¢24,000, after pleading guilty to charges relating to the unlawful discharge of a firearm at a public event.
The court also revoked his firearm licence and ordered the state confiscation of the weapon, bringing the case to a decisive close following public outrage over the incident.
Cyborg, whose real name is Abubakari Sadick, was arrested after a viral video showed him firing a gun during a public gathering at the El-Wak Stadium in Accra on December 28, 2025. The arrest was carried out on December 29, 2025, at Adenta by the Cyber Vetting Team of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
In the widely circulated footage, the convict was heard acknowledging that his actions were unlawful, while making references to President John Dramani Mahama and describing himself as the “Accra New Town Street King.”
He claimed the gunshots were a so-called “government salute” in honour of Nigerian Afrobeats star Asake, whose presence in parts of Accra reportedly triggered the celebratory act.
Police investigations led to the retrieval of the firearm — a Derya MK-12 with registration number 22-GHA-1162 — which was presented as evidence in court.
Following the conviction, the Ghana Police Service reiterated its warning to the public that holding a valid firearm licence does not grant the right to fire a weapon in public spaces. The Police stressed that such conduct attracts sanctions, including licence revocation, fines, and prosecution under Ghanaian law.
The case has since reignited discussions on gun safety, public order, and the strict enforcement of firearms regulations in the country.
