The family of 24-year-old Daniel Asare, a suspected gold dealer in Akyem Mampong near Anyinam, who allegedly died while in police custody under Eastern South Regional Police Command, has rejected the official police account surrounding his death and petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for a full investigation.

According to a police accident report signed by Superintendent Mrs. Emelia Asiedua Gyekye of the Eastern South Regional MTTD, the incident occurred on March 11, 2026, around 3:30 pm on the Anyinam bypass near Mampong.

The report stated that Daniel Asare “was sitting in a police vehicle” when he suddenly opened the door and jumped out while attempting to escape.

Police said he subsequently crashed into a Ford Escape vehicle with registration number GS 7552-13 being driven by Eric Afful, with Rev. Professor Seth Asare Danso onboard.

“He sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Hawa Memorial Saviour Hospital at Osiem for treatment but was pronounced dead shortly on arrival by the medical officer on duty,” the report indicated.

Eyewitnesses account also said the suspect was in handcuff when he was seen being chassed by police.

A post-mortem examination conducted at the Kibi Government Hospital reportedly gave the cause of death as “intracranial bleed (severe head injury) and bilateral fractures of the femur due to road traffic accident.”

The case docket has since been forwarded to the Attorney General’s Office in Koforidua for advice.

However, lawyers for the deceased’s family, Nkrabeah & Associates, have challenged the police narrative, insisting the official explanation is “far away from the truth.”

In a petition addressed to the IGP dated April 7, 2026, the solicitors alleged that some police officers operating within Osino, Anyinam, Akyem Mampong, Kibi and surrounding communities have turned themselves into “illegal gangs” allegedly extorting money from miners.

“From our instructions when the police arrest those on site they demand Ghc 30,000 before a person is released,” the petition alleged.

The lawyers further claimed Daniel Asare died during one of such police operations.

“It was on such an illicit trip to one of the mining sites that they chased the deceased who ran to meet his untimely and painful death,” portions of the petition read.

According to Uncle of the Deceased, Asare ,the victim was not an illegal miner but was on an erand by the site owner whom he did business with to bring him money.

The family is questioning why police failed to disclose the circumstances under which the deceased was in the police vehicle.
“In fact, why did the police not tell us what the deceased was doing in a police vehicle? Did the police give the deceased a lift or was he under arrest? And for what offence?” the petition queried.

The family says it has rejected the body for burial until independent investigations are conducted into the incident.

Meanwhile, the lawyers have also written to the Attorney General’s Office requesting updates on investigations into the matter to enable them advise their client accordingly.

Kwabena Baafi, Father of the deceased described his late son as breadwinner of the family stating that his death has devastated the family and the entire community.

“The family is heartbroken. We are devasted because he was the breadwinner of the family took care of other poor people in the community. His gold trading Business was flourishing so his sudden death is a big blow.

“The IGP must let a committee investigate his death because the narrations of the police do not add up.we suspect foul play”. Kwabena Baafi, the father empasized.
