The Parent and Teachers Association for the La Presbyterian Senior High School has commended the Chief Executive Officer of McDan Shipping for donating furniture to all first-year students of the school.
First-year senior high school students who were placed there were met with empty classrooms because the school has no desks for the students to sit and learn.
The headmaster of the school Samuel Salamat subsequently engaged the services of carpenters to repair the broken furniture, but that was not enough to prevent students from sitting on blocks to study.
CEO of McDan Shipping, Daniel Makorley after a visit to the school pledged to donate furniture to all form one classrooms that have students sitting on concrete and wooden planks.
“It is serious. I really don’t have words to explain it. It broke my heart a little. I had a lot of things to do, but had to cancel to be here to assess the situation,” he said.
Mr Makorley added that he was going to contract a furniture shop to start producing tables and chairs for them immediately.
The Parent Teachers Association welcomed the gesture and appealed to well-meaning citizens to complement government’s effort to provide basic teaching and learning materials to schools in dire need.
