Detention of Abronye shows two types of Ghana – Afenyo-Markin condemns ‘abuse of right’

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has condemned the detention of NPP’s Abronye DC at the NIB, describing it as unlawful, humiliating, and evidence of political victimization.

Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has strongly criticized the continuous detention of Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, describing it as an abuse of his fundamental human rights.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra, Afenyo-Markin expressed concern about what he called “two types of Ghana” one for members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and another for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He explained that Abronye, the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, honored a police invitation on September 8 and submitted himself for interrogation in the presence of his lawyers.

However, instead of being kept in police custody, he was transferred to the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), where he has since been detained.

“Our checks at the NIB confirm that they are not interrogating Abronye, neither are they investigating him. According to them, they are only keeping him on behalf of the police,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

“The question is, why would the Ghana Police Service, which claims to be investigating a misdemeanor case, decide to send a citizen to the NIB cells?”

He further described the act as punitive, stressing that the charges against Abronye publication of false news and offensive conduct are misdemeanors and should not warrant such treatment.

Afenyo-Markin also criticized the decision to handcuff Abronye before and after court appearances, saying it was unnecessary and amounted to humiliation.

“This clearly shows that Abronye’s rights are being abused using the court as a channel,” he said.

The Effutu MP contrasted Abronye’s case with that of an NDC national officer who, he alleged, openly threatened the lives of senior NPP officials but has not faced any arrest.

“That is why I say there are two types of Ghana one for the NDC and the other for the NPP,” he emphasized.

He appealed to government and the Ghana Police Service to put an end to such practices, warning that democracy cannot thrive in an environment of political victimization.

“Let us build one Ghana for all, not two Ghanas for political convenience,” he concluded.

Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, was arraigned before the Accra Circuit Court on September 9, 2025, on two provisional charges of publication of false news and offensive conduct conducive to breaches of the peace.

The police argued that they needed more time for further investigations and requested that he be remanded. The court upheld the application, remanding him into custody until September 12.

However, instead of being held in police custody as the remand order indicated, Abronye was transferred to the NIB cells, a decision that has sparked criticism from sections of the public, his lawyers, and leading members of the NPP.
