The New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary Candidate for Dome Kwabenya, Mike Oquaye Jnr, has accused a group of NDC supporters of vandalising an Electoral Commission (EC) vehicle and causing violence on Sunday, December 8.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, December 10, Oquaye claimed that as the branded EC vehicle entered the car park near the collation centre, a growing mob of NDC supporters surrounded the car.
According to him, they shattered the vehicle’s windows, stole election materials, and caused further chaos.
“As soon as the branded EC vehicle entered the car park towards the collation center, this same NDC mob, which had by then grown larger, surrounded the car. They broke all the windows, vandalized the vehicle, pepper-sprayed those following it, beat the driver with a wooden plank, seized all the EC materials, including the pink sheets and ballot papers, and set them on fire,” Oquaye said.
He described the incident as a serious criminal offense and emphasized its severity.
Oquaye explained that to proceed with the collation process, all parties agreed to continue despite the disruption.
“After this, the police restored calm, increasing their numbers under the direction of the EC. We all agreed to proceed with the collation and address the missing materials afterward to ensure a complete and accurate result,” he added.
Oquaye later revealed that at around 2:30 pm on the same day, the NDC mob attempted to stop the collation process once again.
“At about 2:30 pm on Sunday, the first wave of the mob entered the collation center and tried to halt the process. They argued that if John Mahama had won, then the parliamentary candidate had also won, so the collation should stop. The police managed to overpower them and removed them to the ground floor,” Oquaye said.
