The Minority in Parliament is demanding answers from minister for Communications and Digitalization Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful regarding the reported sale of Airtel Tigo or At to Hannam Investments of UK.
Government acquired the telecom company for $1 according to the sector minister. Other reports however put the cost for the acquisition of the heavily indebted company at $25 million.
Addressing the media in parliament about the reported sale of AT by governments, deputy ranking member for committee on Defence and Interior Samuel Nartey George warned the investors a future NDC administration will not recognize the sale without Parliamentary approval as dictated by law since it’s an international agreement.
“We will want to use this opportunity to serve notice to any foreign investor that they must be very careful in signing any deal. Because if they think that they are buying any asset of the Ghanaians without the proper Parliamentary approval. We can assure them that those agreements are going to be null and void in any court of law in any jurisdiction.
“Because the Constitution of Ghana is very clear. If you go and buy stolen goods you can’t say you bought it from the brother of the goods it validates it. The laws of Ghana says that when you are buying a State asset and you are an international company it must come to Parliament,” Mr. Nartey stated.
