Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Communication Team and Assistant Lecturer at the University for Development Studies, Dr. Seidu Fiter has called for stricter academic standards and discipline at the Senior High School (SHSthe ) and university levels.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Deide Tettey, he expressed concerns about the perceived lack of discipline among university students, which he attributed to a weak foundation in primary and secondary education.
Dr. Fiter argued that universities operate with minimal supervision, allowing students to engage in activities that may be detrimental to their future.
“At the university, nobody cares about whatever you do. And that is why it is easy to see students in ghettos smoking weed, taking alcohol, and indulging in illicit drugs. You cannot train these people to come out properly,” the lecturer stated.
He emphasized the need to focus on instilling discipline at the basic and senior high school levels to curb such behaviors before students enter university.
According to him, restoring proper disciplinary measures in secondary schools will ensure that only well-prepared students’ progress to higher education.
“We should pay more attention to students at the basic level. We should bring back proper discipline at the senior high school level,” he urged.
Dr. Fiter also criticized the current junior high school promotion system, arguing that lenient admission policies to senior high schools have contributed to declining educational standards.
He suggested that students should only be admitted based on merit to encourage academic excellence.
“When JHS students are made to feel that they can be admitted to school with any results acquired, they won’t even try to do well, knowing they will get a school even without paying fees,” he remarked.
