President John Dramani Mahama has dismissed concerns that the ongoing dualization of the Accra–Kumasi highway will be abandoned following the announcement of a new expressway project along the same corridor.
During an inspection tour of the Ofankor–Nsawam stretch—his second visit in three months—the President said the dualization remains a priority and will be completed alongside the new expressway to ease traffic and enhance trade on Ghana’s busiest transit route.
He explained that fears of abandonment were unfounded, saying, “This road is not going to be abandoned… this alignment will still be available for road users.”
President Mahama emphasized that work is progressing on multiple sections, including the Eastern Region stretch from Apedwa to Anyinam, with plans to add the Ashanti Region section next.
He noted that the dualized highway will continue to serve motorists, while the expressway will provide a faster route for long-distance travelers and heavy-duty cargo trucks, who will pay tolls to use it.
The President added that completing both projects would “open up the road” and boost economic activity between the southern and northern parts of the country.
