E/R: Free SHS has brought serious challenges – SECTEC Headmaster

The Headmaster of Koforidua Secondary Technical School (SECTEC), Samuel Prince Foli, has stated that the Free SHS policy has brought intense accommodation problems to the school urging government to fast-track the completion of a dormitory facility ongoing at the school.

“The GETFUND Dormitory block under construction which started in 2009 is about  90% complete but has been abandoned. We, however, plead with the Ministry of Education and GETFUND to help us get this project completed, ” he said.

He added that: “The Free Senior High has brought about serious challenges with boarding house accommodation and so if completed will ease congestion at the dormitories “.

The Headmaster said this Saturday during the climax of the  50th-anniversary Speech and Prize Giving Day of the School in Koforidua on the theme ” Redefining Education for Service to meet current and Future Economic Demands in Ghana “.

The School currently has a student population of 2448 made up of 69 girls.

According to the headmaster, the School lacks Assembly hall hence the small dining hall serves multipurpose; as assembly and entertainment hall, as a result, furniture are frequently moved from the hall leading to frequent breakdowns.

Whenever there are activities at the dining hall, students are forced to eat on the compound, he said.

“Over the years SECTEC has used the dining hall as an assembly hall, a chapel, entertainment hall, and all other gatherings resulting in the frequent breaking of dining hall furniture due to the frequent movement, at present the dining hall has become too small for such a big school hence students eat in turns”.

He said the  PTA of the school has over the years helped ameliorate the challenges by the provision of an 8-unit classroom block and another 3-unit classroom block, 3 mechanize boreholes, 65 sestet bus which is grounded, while paying two nurses to take care of the students’ health and also paying salaries of three security personnel and  fencing the school wall.

Mr. Foli said despite the challenges, the school continues to chock several academic feats.
