The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has outlined a series of ongoing and planned infrastructure projects aimed at improving power reliability across the Ashanti Region, during a high-level briefing at the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC).

The presentation was delivered by the General Manager of Ashanti Sub-Transmission, Ing. Peter Kofi Fletcher, to the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, in the presence of ECG General Managers from all four operational areas in the region.

Ing. Fletcher said ECG’s sub-transmission strategy over the past year has focused on strengthening reliability, not just expanding capacity.

He acknowledged existing pressure points within the network but noted that deliberate interventions are underway to ensure stable electricity supply for households, businesses, hospitals, water systems, and industrial enclaves across the region.

At the heart of Kumasi’s power network, Ing. Fletcher disclosed that ECG, working in collaboration with the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), is upgrading one of the transformers at the Ridge Bulk Supply Point (BSP) with a 145MVA unit, alongside a comprehensive upgrade of the facility.

He explained that the project is expected to reduce system overloads, stabilise the network, and reinforce power delivery to Greater Kumasi.

“Our focus is on reliability where it matters most, homes, hospitals, water systems, businesses, and industrial enclaves,” he said, adding that the Ridge BSP upgrade, together with new substations and critical sub-transmission lines, will support the region’s growth.

Ing. Fletcher further revealed that new substations at Agogo, Nsuta, and Kumawu are at various stages of construction. These projects, he said, are intended to bring power infrastructure closer to rapidly growing communities and provide the capacity needed to support local enterprises, agro-processing, and small businesses.

One of the key projects highlighted was the Adoato–Barekese sub-transmission line, which is expected to improve electricity supply to Suame Municipality, Atafua, Asuofua, Adankwame, Barekese, Offinso, Kodie, Mowire, and surrounding communities.

According to him, the line will also significantly enhance power reliability to the Barekese Water Treatment Plant, contributing to improved water supply to Greater Kumasi.

He also mentioned that the Anwomaso–Airport Substation line will strengthen supply to the Kumasi Airport enclave, Suame Magazine, and other high-load areas, while the Fawoade–Agona line will improve stability along that corridor and ease long-standing supply challenges affecting residents and businesses.

Ing. Fletcher noted that these initiatives build on earlier achievements, including the completion of substations serving Afari and Sewuah Hospitals, ensuring uninterrupted power supply to critical health facilities.

In response, Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene commended ECG for its efforts and resilience, while urging the company to maintain focus on communities still experiencing supply difficulties. He reaffirmed the RCC’s commitment to working closely with ECG, GRIDCo, and other stakeholders to improve electricity delivery across the region.

Both parties agreed that reliable power supply remains central to economic activity, public health, and overall development in the Ashanti Region, as ECG continues to roll out projects aimed at stabilising the network and supporting long-term growth.
