Stricken by blindness at a very young age, 11-year-old Stephen Boi Boateng’s dream of education and a fun-filled childhood was cut short at age six. He lost his sight to cataracts following late diagnosis and financial challenges.
His father, George Ekow Mensah, who is also visually impaired, struggled to provide for both himself and his son. For years, education seemed like a distant dream until George shared his story on Kasapa FM’s “3Ntowoda Show.”
“Thirteen years ago, I also lost my sight to retinal blindness,” George recounted. “But my predicament was not as devastating as when my son began to suffer the same fate.”
Stephen’s hope of becoming a pilot was dashed, but he still longed for an education and the chance to explore his abilities and opportunities. Unfortunately, that too hit a snag, as his school could not accommodate his disability.
“Education was a mirage until my story was featured on Kasapa FM’s 3Ntowoda Show,” George said, explaining that he was hopeful someone would come to their aid.
The intervention paved the way for Stephen’s enrollment at the Akropong School for the Blind, offering him a renewed chance at learning and a brighter future.
“Now, my son has hope again,” George expressed, while Stephen also shared his excitement about being in school.
“3Ntowoda” is a live show on Kasapa 102.5 FM that focuses on social issues in the country. It airs Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 10:30 am.
