A journalist with the EIB Network, Kwabena Agyekum Banahene, was assaulted by a police officer while covering the parliamentary election rerun in the Ablekuma North Constituency on Friday, July 11.
The incident occurred while Banahene was performing his duties in a clearly branded outfit.
A police officer reportedly asked him to vacate the premises despite him identifying himself as a journalist and explaining his presence.
The officer slapped the journalist during the encounter, causing injury. As of now, Banahene is yet to file an official complaint.
The EIB Network has condemned the incident and is calling on the government and security agencies to investigate and take immediate action.
The network also expressed concern over the increasing number of attacks on journalists in the line of duty.
The Electoral Commission (EC) is supervising the rerun in 19 polling stations across the constituency, aimed at resolving verification issues that plagued the December 2024 general elections.
Results from 18 of the 37 initially disputed polling stations had already been certified, leaving the remaining 19 for a fresh vote.

Ablekuma North has remained without a Member of Parliament since 2024 due to the unresolved collation process.
The EC maintains that the rerun is necessary to bring closure to the matter and restore parliamentary representation to the constituency.
