The Member of Parliament for the Akatsi North Constituency, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe has rekindled the call for the election of MMDCEs by the generality of Ghanaians across the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies.
According to the MP, who is also a former DCE, the election of MMDCEs would move Ghana’s democracy a step further, ensure accountability and trust in Ghana’s local governance system.
He said, “I am of the view that there is the need for trust as Ghanaians, to move our democracy forward like electing our District Chief Executives.”
“Because I know the troubles they (nominees) go through to be confirmed. So if we amend the constitution and allow the generality of Ghanaians in every District to elect their political leaders, I am of the view that it will be better for us because as a DCE when you’re elected by the people, you become more accountable to them than the appointing authority,” he added.
Mr. Nortsu-Kotoe who was speaking at a special Assembly meeting held for the confirmation of the DCE nominee for the Akatsi North District Assembly on Wednesday, also called on the government to as a matter of urgency release the statutory District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) to the various Assemblies, noting that the delay in the release of the fund continues to affect development at the local level.
“For some time now, the Assemblies have been without funds for development projects. For one year now, the Assemblies have not received their Common Funds and its retrogressive to development in the Districts.”
He appealed that government releases the funds as a matter of urgency now that MMDCEs nominees are being confirmed across the country.
