The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has declared the 2024 December elections as peaceful, free, and fair.
EC Chairperson Jean Adukwei Mensa proudly announced that the commission has upheld the integrity of Ghana’s democracy by ensuring a transparent and fair electoral process.
Mrs. Mensa, addressing Ghanaians, emphasised that the election was conducted with utmost transparency, fairness, and adherence to democratic principles, ensuring that the will of the people was expressed at the polls.
She said, “The voters of Ghana have spoken; they have expressed their choice at the poll, and that choice will today be upheld by the Electoral Commission of Ghana. As a commission, we have fulfilled our vowed aspirations to imbibe transparency, accountability, inclusiveness, and responsiveness at the heart of all our operations, and I can confidently say that with the help of God, we have fulfilled these aspirations and the expectations of the citizenry.”.
“We have conducted elections that are credible, fair, transparent, and peaceful. Elections that have ensured that the will of the people is expressed at the polls.”.
The successful conduct of the elections has been praised by international observers, including the United States, which commended Ghana for its commitment to peaceful elections.
The peaceful nature of the elections was further reinforced by the dignified concession speech of Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, who emphasised the importance of democracy and peaceful transfer of power.
The US Embassy also stressed the significance of Ghana’s democratic practices, noting that such processes are vital for the nation’s stability and prosperity.
In the presidential race, John Dramani Mahama secured a decisive victory, winning 6,328,397 votes, or 56.55% of the total vote.
His main opponent, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, garnered 4,657,304 votes, representing 41.61%.
