The Electoral Commission (EC) has stated that it will take a decision on the actions of an arrested electoral officer in Kintampo South, Bono East Region after the police conclude their investigation. The incident involves allegations of electoral malpractice during the ongoing 2024 general election.
The suspect, identified as Dery Joseph, was apprehended by the police for issuing approximately 15 ballot papers to voters that excluded the name of the first presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. This development was disclosed in a statement issued by the police.
The alleged malpractice occurred at the Ampesika Bayere polling station, where the affected voters reportedly noticed the omission and raised concerns. The police are currently conducting investigations to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the issuance of the flawed ballot papers.
In a brief statement, the EC assured the public of its commitment to upholding the integrity of the electoral process and expressed confidence in the police to conduct a thorough investigation. “The Electoral Commission will take a decision after the police have completed their investigations into the matter,” the statement noted.
The EC also emphasized its dedication to ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections, while urging all stakeholders to remain calm and allow due process to take its course. The police have yet to provide further details about the investigation or any charges that may be filed against the suspect.
