The National Chairman of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has reiterated President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to tackling electoral violence and ensuring accountability for political crimes.
He cited the recent prosecution of NDC sympathizers who assaulted former Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister, Hawa Koomson, during the Ablekuma North rerun election as evidence that the government is serious about curbing electoral misconduct.
The eight individuals involved were convicted on July 11, 2025, and collectively fined GH¢48,000, with each paying GH¢6,000. In default, they will serve 24 months in prison.
Speaking to supporters in the Nsawam Adoagyiri constituency during his thank-you tour, Mr. Nketia warned that those responsible for more serious electoral crimes, including maiming and killings under the Akufo-Addo administration, will also face justice.
“If a slap on someone during the Ablekuma North election has landed the perpetrators in court, then those who shot and killed people or injured others must wait for their turn,” he declared.
He also indicated that individuals involved in a shooting incident in Nsawam, which left a person injured, will not escape accountability.
The NDC Chairman criticized Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Minority Chief Whip and MP for Nsawam Adoagyiri, accusing him of using unfair tactics to retain his seat, and assured supporters that Annoh-Dompreh will be unseated in the 2028 elections.
On governance, Mr. Nketia emphasized that the NDC’s “reset agenda” is ongoing, including plans to cleanse and depoliticize key state institutions such as the Judiciary and the Electoral Commission.
He urged party members to remain patient and supportive of the Mahama administration, even if personal expectations are yet to be realized.
“An NDC member whose party is in power is more relevant than a chairman of the opposition NPP,” he told cheering supporters.
Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey highlighted the importance of the thank-you tour at the constituency level, stressing that it reassures residents and encourages continued support for President Mahama’s government.
