Nana Yaw Addo, the Akwatia Constituency Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has confirmed that Member of Parliament Ernest Yaw Kumi died after complaining of severe chest pain in the early hours of Monday, July 7.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Joshua Kodjo Mensah on Tuesday, July 8, Mr. Addo explained that the MP was rushed to Leicester Hospital shortly after midnight but died while awaiting further medical attention from a specialist.
“We are told by the wife that around 1 o’clock midnight, he complained of chest pain. So around 2 o’clock, they had to take him to Leicester Hospital because the pain was persistent, even when he had taken some painkillers. But he didn’t go to the hospital in an ambulance, he walked in, so he was attended to,” Mr. Addo recounted.
He added that upon arrival at the hospital, Mr. Kumi was attended to, and his vitals were reportedly stable. However, a specialist was not immediately available.
“But around that time, the specialist was not around. So we were told that the specialist would come in the morning. But when his vitals were checked, he was okay. So he was okay. And they were monitoring him until the specialist came. Unfortunately, around 9 o’clock or so, when they went to check on him, he had passed on.”
Ernest Kumi, popularly known as the “Akwatia Star Boy,” reportedly died from a suspected heart attack. Family sources have pointed to a cardiac-related incident, though official confirmation is still pending.
His death comes amid legal disputes surrounding his election to Parliament following a hotly contested race in December 2024, where he won the Akwatia seat for the NPP.
