Facebook posted an unusual thread on its Twitter account suggesting important revelations are on the way.
There was no indication of what should be revealed about the company. But it claimed that whatever it was coverage “misrepresents our actions and motivations.”
The thread and its attack on nameless journalists came after weeks of reporting on how Facebook worked internally. Based on internal documents, reports suggested that Facebook, for example, was aware of the harm its platforms were doing to young women.
It appeared to be referring to these reports when it said that “documents can be mischaracterized” and that it would be wrong to extract Facebook’s official position from the discussions in these documents.
In the thread, Facebook appeared to be suggesting that this would happen in any expected new reports about the company. It appeared to indicate that the documents would contain “suggestions” for changes to Facebook.
While the Facebook team did not provide any information on these suggestions, it appeared to suggest that the reports would include comments from individual employees that were shared as work in progress. She did not provide any information on the content of the allegations that should be included in the report, nor did she give any indication of when she expected the new revelations.
“We expect the press to hold us accountable for our size and role in the world. But if the reporting misrepresents our actions and motivations, we believe we should correct the record, ”said Facebook on the tweet thread attributed to its vice president of communications, John Pinette.
“In the last 6 weeks, including over the weekend, we have seen how documents can be incorrectly characterized. Obviously, not every employee at Facebook is an executive; not every opinion is the company’s position.
“Right now, over 30 journalists are completing a coordinated series of articles based on thousands of pages of leaked documents. We hear that the outlets had to agree to terms and a schedule from the PR team that was working on previously leaked documents in order to obtain the documents.
“A curated selection from millions of documents on Facebook can in no way be used to draw fair conclusions about us. Internally, we share ongoing work and discuss options. Not every proposal stands the test we must apply to decisions that affect so many people.
“For those news organizations that want to go beyond an orchestrated ‘gotcha’ campaign, we’re ready to dive into the substance.”
