Applicants seeking to join Ghana’s security services and found to have falsified their WASSCE results could face more than dismissal, with the Interior Minister, Muntaka Mubarak Mohammed, warning that such individuals may be permanently barred from future recruitment.
The Minister disclosed that several recruits had already been dismissed from security service training institutions after verification checks revealed that the WASSCE results they submitted during the recruitment process had been forged or doctored.
According to Alhaji Muntaka, the discrepancies were uncovered after the certificates and results slips presented by applicants were forwarded to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) for verification.
He said the affected recruits would be placed on a “red list” to prevent them from applying to join any of the country’s security services in future.
The Minister also indicated that management of the various security services was considering prosecution for individuals found to have deliberately falsified their academic records.
He expressed concern that people seeking positions in institutions responsible for enforcing Ghana’s laws would themselves resort to fraudulent practices to secure employment.
“It’s so shocking that a lot of people forged their results. I don’t know how they think that they will be employed in the Police, Prisons, Immigration, Fire Service, Narcotics Control Commission, or Armed Forces, and the certificate you present won’t be checked,” he said.
“As we speak, many have been dismissed from the training because they have doctored their results slips.”
The Minister was speaking at a ceremony to commission new classroom facilities at the Asokore Mampong Roman Catholic School.
His comments come amid a broader crackdown on misconduct among recruits undergoing training for Ghana’s security services.
Recently, the Minister disclosed that at least 10 recruits had been dismissed for breaching a directive banning mobile phones during training.
The recruits were reportedly found to have secretly kept mobile phones despite being instructed to surrender their devices upon arrival at their respective training institutions.
Alhaji Muntaka urged prospective applicants to carefully assess their qualifications before applying to join any of the security services.
He cautioned that applicants who attempt to gain entry through fraudulent academic credentials risk losing their places and facing further sanctions once their documents are subjected to verification.
