In a moment that rekindles hope from one of Ghana’s darkest days, Solomon Akugru, a survivor of the tragic June 3rd disaster, has been officially enrolled in the National Apprenticeship Programme by the National Youth Authority (NYA).
After years of struggling to make ends meet and turning to street begging, Solomon is now set on a new path towards recovery and independence.
The National Apprenticeship Programme is a government initiative aimed at promoting self-employment by offering free technical and vocational training to young Ghanaians. Successful apprentices are expected to receive certification, start-up capital, and the equipment needed to establish their own businesses. Solomon will be trained in tile-laying under the programme, equipping him with practical skills and a dignified pathway to economic independence.

His breakthrough came through the intervention of social media influencer and humanitarian advocate, Kobby Kyei, who brought his story to public attention. Deeply touched by Solomon’s situation, the Chief Executive Officer of the NYA, Osman Ayariga, personally took steps to ensure his enrollment into a tile-laying apprenticeship, offering him the tools to rebuild his life.

“This is not just a publicity stunt by the NYA,” Mr Ayariga said during the completion of Solomon’s apprenticeship form. “These are real, touching stories that, as human as you are, you should be able to reach out and extend a helping hand to people who are suffering. It could be me, it could be you or anyone and we will always need that support and help.”
The June 3rd disaster, which claimed over 150 lives due to flooding and a massive explosion at a GOIL fuel station in Accra, left many with devastating injuries. For Solomon, the scars have been both physical and emotional. This new opportunity signifies not only skills training but also a renewed sense of hope and dignity.

In a Facebook post, Kobby Kyei expressed his appreciation: “Thank you, @osmanayariga, CEO of the National Youth Authority, for warmly welcoming us and showing genuine interest in Solomon Akugru’s journey. Your personal involvement in facilitating his enrollment in the National Apprenticeship Programme speaks volumes. By equipping him with tile-laying skills, you are helping him rebuild his future with dignity. We are truly grateful for your compassionate leadership and unwavering support.”
Responding to the post, Mr Ayariga voiced , “It is a call to humanity and a call to serve, my brother. Thank you, and God bless you for the good you are doing for Mother Ghana.”
