NORTHCODE Ghana has stepped in with urgent humanitarian support for victims of the violent clashes between the Brifors and the Gonjas in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba district, which left 18 people dead, 29 injured, and hundreds displaced.
The national NGO, known for its peacebuilding efforts in the Savannah Region, delivered relief items through the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) to victims sheltering at the Sawla police station.

The donations included clean water, sanitary pads, nose masks, and soap, aimed at addressing health and hygiene needs in the overcrowded camps.
In addition, NORTHCODE presented an undisclosed cash donation to the chiefs and people of Kalba to support affected families, including the bereaved family of the Kalba Chief’s son, who was among those killed in the violence.

Program Director Andrews Dokurugu described the tragedy as deeply personal, saying, “These victims are known to us. We appeal to the parties to smoke the peace pipe and give peace a chance.”
Executive Director Cletus Zume said the organization would continue contributing to peace efforts and appealed for calm so that children could return to school when the new term begins.

Despite the intervention, the needs remain overwhelming. NORTHCODE has called on other NGOs, civil society groups, and philanthropists to provide food, water, blankets, and other essentials to complement NADMO’s efforts.
The Sawla-Tuna-Kalba crisis highlights the fragility of peace in northern Ghana, but NORTHCODE’s response blends relief and reconciliation, offering hope for recovery and stability.
