The Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed staff and pupils of the Accra Newtown Experimental D/A School to vacate the premises and stay clear of the site following the collapse of a building on the school’s compound which resulted in multiple casualties.
The Director-General of GES, Prof Ernest Kofi Davis, who issued the directive after a security briefing at the school added that GES will determine the next steps for the school after an emergency meeting.
“We are going to work with the regional and national teams, including the estate department, to ensure that the remaining structures are safe for use. If they are not, we will advise students to avoid those areas,” Prof Davis told Accra-based Citi FM.
He however stressed that students must not return to the school until all safety concerns are addressed.
The uncompleted 3-storey classroom block which collapsed on the evening of Sunday, March 29, 2026 trapped several worshippers of a nearby church who had congregated at the location for evening worship.
A total of 23 persons including three minors were trapped in the debris. 20 were rescued and sent to the hospital while three lost their lives.
The three confirmed fatalities, comprised two females and one male.
The cause of the collapse remains unknown, with officials expected to launch investigations to determine what led to the incident.
