The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and Portuguese coach, Carlos Queiroz have mutually agreed to terminate the service agreement governing his role as head coach of the Black Stars.
The decision was announced on Thursday, 1 October 2026, following discussions conducted in a spirit of mutual respect.
The parties stated that ending the professional relationship was the most appropriate course of action under the present circumstances, placing the interests of Ghana, the Black Stars and Ghanaian football above all else.
Queiroz noted in a statement that the decision was not easy.
“It has been an honour to serve Ghana and the Black Stars. I sincerely thank the Ghana Football Association and particularly its President for their trust and for the opportunity to lead such a proud football nation,” he wrote.
Queiroz, who was appointed in April 2026 as a short-term replacement for Otto Addo, guided the Black Stars through the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Ghana reached the Round of 32 before a 1-0 defeat to Colombia.
After the tournament, Quiroz and GFA reached a further arrangement covering the September international window and the opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The team’s recent results contributed to the outcome.
Ghana lost 2-0 to Côte d’Ivoire and then 4-2 at home to The Gambia in their first two Group C matches of the AFCON qualifiers, leaving them without points.
Queiroz noted that he arrived determined to help build a stronger future for the Black Stars and support the development of Ghanaian talent.
“Despite our commitment and efforts, the necessary conditions were not fully established, and our recent performance added to the decision to bring this journey to an end…I leave with respect, gratitude and pride,” he said.
He thanked his technical staff and all who supported the team since preparations for the World Cup, and paid particular tribute to the players.
“Believe in these players. Protect them. Support them. The talent and potential are there. With unity, support and the right environment, this generation can achieve great things for Ghana,” he said.
Queiroz closed by expressing gratitude to the Ghanaian people and Black Stars supporters for their passion and warmth, adding that he would always carry Ghana with respect and affection.
“Ghana comes first. The Black Stars come first. Ghanaian football comes first. Thank you, Ghana. To the Future.”
The departure leaves the Black Stars without a permanent head coach ahead of the next AFCON qualifying window.
The GFA has not yet announced interim arrangements or a timeline for appointing a successor.
