Road transport operators have dismissed reports of a purported 20 percent increase in public transport fares scheduled to take effect on June 2, 2026, describing the announcement as unauthorized and illegal.
In a joint press release issued on June 1, the leadership of the Road Transport Operators said they had not engaged the Ministry of Transport on any fare adjustment and had not approved any increase in transport fares.
According to the statement, any decision to increase fares must follow an agreed protocol and procedure established between the Ministry of Transport and transport operators.
“The decision by the supposed group is illegal as it has not gone through the fare adjustment protocol and procedure agreed between the Ministry of Transport and the Road Transport Operators,” the statement said.
The operators therefore urged the public to disregard publications suggesting that transport fares would increase by 20 percent from June 2.
“We wish to condemn this decision in no uncertain terms and request the general public to disregard the publication by the supposed group with the contempt it deserves,” the statement added.
The leadership further directed all transport operators, unions, associations, drivers, vehicle owners, loading point managers, and other stakeholders within the sector to continue charging existing approved fares and refrain from implementing any unilateral fare increases.
The statement noted that transport operators are monitoring the next fuel pricing window and would engage relevant stakeholders if circumstances warrant a review of fares.
“Should there be the need for any fare adjustment, the public will be duly notified,” the operators stated.
They also reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the interests of both commuters and transport operators while working with relevant authorities to ensure stability within the transport sector.
The statement was jointly signed by General Secretary of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Mr. Godfred Abulbire, and General Secretary of the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), Mr. Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah, on behalf of road transport operators nationwide.
