Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced that Ghanaian citizens can look forward to more visa-free travel as the government intensifies efforts to secure new agreements.
Speaking on the sidelines of the 2026 African Union Executive Council Session of Foreign Ministers in Ethiopia, Ablakwa highlighted that boosting the value and credibility of the Ghanaian passport remains a top priority.
“We want the Ghanaian passport to be the most valued passport in Africa and one of the most valued anywhere in the world. And we are on course,” he said, praising the work of his diplomatic team in negotiating the agreements.
The minister confirmed that over ten visa-waiver agreements have already been secured, including a deal with Morocco, and promised more announcements in the coming months.
Ablakwa also reassured citizens that passport security will not be compromised despite the increased access.
“Remember that the passport itself… is now probably the most secure in terms of the security features we have. It’s now fully chip-embedded, no longer biometric, and we are ahead of so many countries.”
He further emphasized the government’s commitment to affordability, noting that passport fees have been reduced by 30% to ensure all Ghanaians can access the travel document.
“These are great times for Ghanaian passport holders… Passports should not be a luxury. All Ghanaians… should be able to afford a Ghanaian passport,” Ablakwa stated, underscoring the combination of enhanced value, security, and accessibility.
This push for visa-free travel aligns with Ghana’s broader strategy to increase mobility for citizens, strengthen diplomatic ties, and enhance the nation’s global profile.
