Ghana’s 8th Parliament, under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is set to dissolve today in preparation for the 9th Parliament, which will usher in the administration of incoming President John Dramani Mahama.
In this final session, Members of Parliament will wrap up all outstanding legislative business and bid farewell to the chamber as their term comes to a close.
The occasion will be filled with reflection on past contributions and anticipation for the future, as lawmakers pave the way for the incoming Parliament.
The 8th Parliament has been one of the most closely contested in Ghana’s history.
The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) had an equal number of seats, 137 each, with one Independent Member, leading to intense debates and rigorous negotiations to pass key legislation.
Following the dissolution, newly elected Members of Parliament will be sworn in at midnight, marking the start of the 9th Parliament.
One of the first tasks will be the election of a Speaker, or the re-election of the current Speaker, along with the selection of two deputy Speakers.
Notably, the NDC now holds a historic majority, securing more seats than any party in Ghana’s parliamentary history.
