Ghana’s newly appointed Ambassador to Italy, Mona-Helen Kabuki Quartey, has formally presented her Letters of Credence to Sergio Mattarella during an official ceremony held at the Quirinale on Thursday, February 19.
The ceremony signifies the official commencement of Ambassador Quartey’s diplomatic mission in Italy and ushers in what both countries describe as a renewed phase in the consolidation of bilateral relations. Ghana and Italy have long-standing ties rooted in dialogue, cooperation and mutual respect.
During discussions held in what was described as a cordial atmosphere, both sides reaffirmed the strong bonds of friendship between their nations and reiterated their shared commitment to strengthening collaboration across political, economic, cultural and multilateral fronts.
Italy is regarded as a strategic European partner for Ghana, while Accra continues to position itself as a reliable partner for Rome in West Africa, a region seen as geopolitically significant and central to Africa’s sustainable development prospects.
Talks also focused on expanding trade and investment, particularly in energy, agribusiness, infrastructure, education and technological cooperation. Ghana, described as one of Sub-Saharan Africa’s dynamic economies, expressed interest in leveraging Italian expertise in manufacturing, agri-food production and small and medium-sized enterprises.
The cultural and tourism sectors featured prominently in the discussions, with Italy recognising Ghana as a growing market and a gateway to the wider West African region.
Both sides further highlighted Ghana’s national reset agenda, including the infrastructure-driven “Big Push” initiative and the “24-hour Economy” programme, as key areas for potential collaboration.
Amid global challenges such as international security concerns, migration management, climate change and the pursuit of fair and sustainable development, Ghana and Italy reaffirmed their support for effective multilateralism and stronger cooperation between the European Union and the African continent.
The presentation of credentials was described as more than a ceremonial formality, symbolising renewed diplomatic momentum and a shared determination to intensify political dialogue and translate mutual aspirations into practical initiatives that benefit businesses, institutions and citizens in both countries.
With this step, a new chapter in Ghana–Italy relations has formally begun, anchored on cooperation, mutual trust and a shared vision for deeper partnership between Europe and Africa.
