The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has lifted the media blackout placed on Mavis Hawa Koomson, the Member of Parliament (MP) representing Awutu-Senya East in the Central region.
This comes on the back of the GJA and its media collaborators convened on Thursday, February 15, 2024, to reassess the blackout imposed on Koomson, who also serves as the Minister of Fisheries and Aqua Culture Development.
The initial blackout aimed to seek justice for David Kobena, a Cape FM morning show host who was assaulted by individuals clad in attire featuring the MP’s branding.
Mr. Kobena was assaulted during the vetting of New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary aspirants in the Central Region’s Cape Coast on January 4, 2024.
However, in a statement the GJA stated that the move is after consultations with its media partners and subsequently directed all media outlets to adhere to this decision.
On Thursday, February 15, 2024, Ms Koomson redeemed her promise to engage the GJA to settle the impasse by meeting the National Executive of the Association at the Ghana International Press Centre.
She was accompanied by the Minister-designate for Information, Fatimatu Abubakar, for the meeting, which was attended by the President of the Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG), Edwin Arthur; the Executive Secretary of the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), Gloria Hiadzi, and the Programme Manager for Freedom of Expression at the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Muheeb Saeed.
