The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has launched a nationwide vehicle fire extinguisher compliance exercise to boost road safety and reduce losses from vehicular fires.
The exercise began on December 18, 2025, and will ensure all vehicles on Ghanaian roads carry functional, GNFS-certified, and easily accessible fire extinguishers.
Led by the GNFS Fire Safety Compliance Taskforce in collaboration with the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, officers will conduct on-the-spot safety checks, issue certification tags, and provide guidance on extinguisher use and maintenance.
The exercise also includes engagements with transport unions and associations to educate drivers on fire preparedness.
Vehicle owners are required to have at least one certified extinguisher, securely mounted and serviceable, along with other safety essentials like warning triangles and first-aid kits.
The GNFS emphasized that quick access to a working extinguisher can prevent minor incidents from escalating into serious accidents, underscoring the importance of the initiative as part of its broader mandate to enhance road safety and public protection.
