Government is expected to announce a clear and definitive position on the Bawku mediation report within the next 24 hours.

President John Dramani Mahama has given the assurance after receiving the final report on the mediation process from the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Presidency on Tuesday, December 16.

The Asantehene was earlier tasked by the President to lead mediation efforts aimed at resolving the protracted chieftaincy conflict in Bawku.

Speaking after the presentation, President Mahama described the report as a critical milestone in the peace process and stressed that the focus must now move beyond dialogue to healing, reconciliation, and unity.

“I am pleased that Otumfuo’s mediation has come to an end and that he has presented his report. I can assure him that government will study the report and within the next 24 hours issue a statement outlining our definitive position,” the President said.

He underscored the need for sustained engagement between the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities, noting that the next phase must prioritise reconciliation to secure lasting peace in the area.

Presenting the report, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II emphasised that the process was purely mediation and not arbitration. He explained that all parties willingly participated and should therefore respect the outcomes, adding that the goal was not to declare winners or losers, but to establish facts and build consensus in the interest of peace.

The mediation process began in April 2025 with separate consultations with representatives of the feuding factions. Although it was briefly suspended, it later resumed in May and contributed to a period of relative calm in Bawku.

President Mahama expressed gratitude to the Asantehene for his leadership and commitment, assuring him that government will act promptly and responsibly on the recommendations contained in the report.

The expected government statement is anticipated to outline the next steps, including measures to support reconciliation, rebuild trust between the factions, and prevent a return to violence in Bawku.
